Concentrations
The Communication Program at UTSA consists of three concentrations: Social Interaction, Technical Communication, and Public Relations.
In accordance with the University's mission to "contribute to the technological, economic and cultural development of the city and region," the curriculum emphasizes communication practices in a multicultural and multiethnic metropolitan setting. A specific goal of the program is to train minority students for professional opportunities in communication. The objective is a degree program of high quality which serves the professional aspirations of UTSA students as well as the economic needs of San Antonio and South Texas.
Social Interaction
The Social Interaction concentration provides general grounding in communication theory, research, and practice, treating such traditional areas as interpersonal and small group communication, rhetorical analysis, and persuasion. Some students in this concentration will pursue careers in education. Students in this concentration may also pursue advanced study in Communication at the graduate level.
Technical Communication
The Technical Communication concentration enables students to explore the processes of creating and distributing information in a variety of formats. Students will study the principles of writing for various audiences using technologies of layout and design, desktop publishing, and writing for the World Wide Web.
Public Relations
The Public Relations concentration examines how corporations, governments, and civic groups create campaigns to manage relations with their various publics. Students will become information specialists, learning to inform their constituents and persuade them to action through strategies which foster organizational goals and serve the public interest.
