2008-9 Faculty Positions
The Department of Communication at the University of Texas at San Antonio invites applications for tenured/tenure-track faculty, beginning Fall 2009. We seek individuals interested in assisting us in our continued progress toward national prominence. The Department has a new Master’s degree program, is participating in planning for a Ph.D. program and Center in Interdisciplinary Health Communication (clinical and behavioral sciences) with the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, and has one of the largest Public Relations programs in the country. Located on 600 acres of oak and cedar woods at the foothills of the beautiful Texas hill country, UTSA is expanding to become a tier one research institution and is developing a national reputation of excellence. San Antonio is a growing, vibrant, and ethnically diverse city offering a variety of cultural and recreational opportunities.
Position 1 -- Public Relations: one or more positions at the Assistant Professor rank. Required qualifications: Ph.D. in Communication, Mass Communication, Journalism, or related field; a strong background in Public Relations. Preferred qualifications: experience teaching Public Relations courses. Responsibilities include: 1) teaching Public Relations courses, such as introduction, writing, case studies, campaigns, and research methods; 2) developing curricula, teaching, and supervising theses or serving on thesis committees at the graduate level; and 3) maintaining an active research agenda.
Position 2 -- New Media Technologies: one or more positions at the Assistant Professor rank. Required qualifications: Ph.D. in Communication or related field (Ed.D. may be considered); a strong background in new media technologies and/or technical communication, including web development, desktop publishing and digital media production. Preferred qualifications: professional media production experience, including digital video and multimedia productions. Responsibilities include: 1) teaching courses in new media studies and production and other courses in area(s) of specialization; 2) developing curricula, teaching, and supervising theses or serving on thesis committees at the graduate level; and 3) maintaining an active research agenda.
Position 3 – Organizational Communication: one or more positions at the Associate or Assistant Professor rank. Required qualifications: Ph.D. in Communication or related field; a strong background in organizational communication, communication theory, and research methods. Responsibilities include: 1) teaching organizational communication, communication theory, research methods, and other courses assigned and in area(s) of specialization offered; 2) developing curricula, teaching, and supervising theses/projects or serving on thesis/project committees at the graduate level; and 3) maintaining an active research agenda.
Position 4 –Communication Studies: one or more positions at the Associate or Assistant Professor rank. Required qualifications: Ph.D. in Communication; a strong background in research methods (quantitative or qualitative), and a strong background in communication theory. Preferred qualifications include a background in one or more of the following areas: health communication, international communication, intercultural communication, issues management, and/or other research areas related to the mission of the department. Responsibilities include: 1) teaching communication theory, research methods, and other courses assigned and in area(s) of specialization offered; 2) developing curricula, teaching, and supervising theses/projects or serving on thesis/project committees at the graduate level; and 3) maintaining an active research agenda.
Other Requirements by Rank
Associate Professor – requires significant teaching experience in position applied for, as well as experience in graduate-level teaching, thesis advising, and an established record of publication commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated academic leadership accomplishments.
Assistant Professor – requires evidence or promise of scholarly research and publication. If an ABD candidate does not complete the Ph.D. or other required terminal degree by September 1, 2009, he/she may be appointed as an Instructor. Preference will be given to candidates with experience directing Master’s theses or serving on thesis committees.
