Juyan Zhang, Ph.D.

Juyan Zhang earned his doctoral degree from the School of Journalism, University of Missouri-Columbia in 2003, his ML from the School of International Relations, Beijing University in 1997, and his BL from the Department of International Politics, Renmin University of China in 1994. He taught at the Department of Communication, Monmouth University between 2003 and 2007.
Before he moved to the United States in 2000, Dr. Zhang worked as a newspaper journalist in South China for close to three years. He reported as a freelancer since 2003 for Washington Observer Weekly, a news magazine that relies on first-hand interviews to report American foreign policies, socioeconomic development, trends in U.S. politics, and Sino-U.S. relations.
Dr. Zhang's teaching and research interests include public relations, international communication, journalism and media analysis. His research primarily focuses on public diplomacy, or public relations by national governments in international relations. He published close to a dozen papers and book chapters in such journals as Public Relations Review, Journal of Communication Management and Newspaper Research Journal. His recent publications include "Beyond anti-terrorism: Metaphor as message strategy of post-September-11 U.S. public diplomacy" (Public Relations Review, 33 (2007), 31-39) and "Symbolic interactionism in public diplomacy: A case study of major power's diplomatic communications in the Asian tsunami relief campaigns" (Public Relations Review, Vol. 32, No. 1, Spring 2006, 26-32).
Dr. Zhang recently signed a book contract for publishing his manuscript on international public relations.
