How do I join the debate team?

Anybody interested can join the debate team regardless of experience. All you have to do is contact Skip at reno@utsa.edu and he can get your collegiate debating career started.


Will it cost me anything to join?

No. Debate participation is funded through Student Activity Fees and contributions from the Debate Union.

All costs, transportation, housing, fees and a limited food per diem, are paid for from the forensics budget. Copying and equipment costs are shared between the program and the students.


If I join the debate team, how much school will I miss? How many tournaments do we participate in?

UTSA teams travel on both regional and national levels. We compete in 10-16 tournaments per year.

All travel is considered school business and most professors are willing to work with debaters. You are still responsible for completing assignments on time.

Typically, UTSA debaters will travel to both coasts and many locations between each year.

Half of the trips are by air – the other half are "bonding" trips in 15-passenger vans piloted by Captain Eno.
