The Master of Arts Degree in Communication offers students the opportunity for advanced study in Communication. This program is grounded in the concept of Integrated Communication and encourages broad perspectives in applying research, discovery, critical thinking, and creative enterprise for individuals and groups in a variety of settings. Students can develop knowledge and skills in communication that are requisite for success in leadership, scholarship, and/or creative endeavors in business, public sector, and non-profit environments.
Prospective students must submit an application and fee to be considered for admission to UTSA’s Graduate School. Admission is granted to students who have satisfied University-wide requirements, and who, as undergraduates, completed at least 18 hours (12 upper-division) of coursework in Communication or a related field. Other admission requirements include submission of scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test and two letters of recommendation from academic sources. Additionally, applicants must submit a statement of purpose, 500–750 words long, describing the applicant’s academic and other qualifications to be admitted to this program, areas of interest in the program, and goals related to pursuing the Master’s degree in Communication.
Graduate teaching and research assistantships are available to qualified students enrolled in the program, along with reader/grader positions.
Teaching Assistants assist faculty with class preparation, occasional lecturing, individual/small group student instruction, and grading in designated courses.
Research Assistants assist faculty with research or creative projects. They may be required to do work in the library, field research, computer-based activities, or work in other contexts.
Reader-Graders assist faculty with class preparation, coordination and grading in designated courses.
To be eligible to work as an RA or TA, graduate students must be enrolled for 6 hours in long session or 3 hours in summer. University policy requires that all employees, including students, undergo a criminal background check before appointments are approved.
Applications are accepted for the Fall semester only. The priority deadline for financial aid is March 31. Admission priority will be given to complete applications received by April 1. The application deadline for international students is April 1. The final deadline for admission is July 1.
