Organization Description

SAMYS is an IRS-certified charity building and maintaining quality soccer fields. It also hosts soccer tournaments and plans to promote soccer through the offering of training and certification classes for coaches and referees.

Intern Responsibilities

Developing and implementing a marketing and public relations strategy to promote SAMYS’ soccer facility, "PEPSI Soccer, TX"; its signature soccer tournament, the Alamo Cup National Invitational (both the current high school age girls’ event and the boys’ tournament in the planning stage); the as-yet-unnamed international invitational boys’ tournament for players from North and Central American and the Carribean. Included would be the obtaining and maintaining business sponsors, governmental supporters and foundation grant funding.

Skills Required

Knowledge of and passion for soccer, including youth soccer, would be a big plus. Use of Word, Excel, Publisher and other word/data processing programs would be helpful. Website creation and maintenance skills would be nice, too.

Additional Information

SAMYS, to date, has attracted about $750,000 in support, mostly in in-kind donations by businesses in the area. To show for its efforts, it has a 42 acre facility northeast of SA with 14 acres of irrigated grass formed into 7 full-sized soccer fields. By the fall, it will have 11 fields and, next year, the full 15 fields to fulfill its master plan. SAMYS inaugurated the Alamo Cup tournament in 2000 and, in 2001, will host the best 32 high school age girls teams from all over the country, plus perhaps a hundred or so college coaches interested in recruiting them. In 2002, it will expand to a full 48 teams. Plans are already underway to create a similar tournament for high school age boys. Plans for an international invitational tournament are just being formed. Most of the marketing and public relations work can be done by an intern on their own time and at their own location. To the extent long-distance and international voice and fax communication is involved, it can be done using the phone lines at 103 Devine (near Trinity University). Local travel to meet sponsors and supporters may be involved. In the future, airline travel (using donated complimentary tickets) within and outside the U.S. is possible.
