COMMUNICATION AND THE CORPORATE COLONIZATION OF THE FAMILY

Sponsor: Family Communication Division

Chair: Patricia J. Sotirin, Michigan Tech University

During this session, we explore ways corporate logics are insinuated into domestic arrangements and practices. Our common inspiration is a recent Oprah Winfrey show entitled "How to Build a Family Team." In it, Family Manager Kathy Peel advised to adopt a corporate team-building strategy to ensure that households run with cooperation and efficiency. Peel's advice illustrates what Deetz (1992) has referred to as the "corporate colonization of the lifeworld." Panelists will use selections from the show as a departure point for discussing implications of using corporate metaphors to frame family communication
