This panel is one in a series sponsored by the Commission on Family Communication that brings to SCA distinguished family scholars with special expertise that is of broad appeal for SCA members. Gerald Handel, a leading family sociologist for more than thirty years, is perhaps best known in the communication discipline for his work on the 1959 classic Family Worlds, and on other qualitative works such as his co-edited Qualitative Methods in Family Research and the Psychosocial Interior of the Family. Professor Handel will speak on the historical roots of Family Worlds at the "Chicago School" of sociology at the University of Chicago, and on the qualitative tradition in family research. His presentation will be followed by short commentaries from the respondents on Professor Handel's work, and discussion with the audience.
