THE CHAIR'S REPORT
ON THE 1993 SCA CONFERENCE

The Commission on Family Communication sponsored its biggest program yet, with a total of 14 panels at the SCA convention in Miami. Awards were presented to our Top Four panelists: Laura I. Guerrero, Lesa Stern, Michelle L. Johnson, Walid A. Afifi, Michael Payne, and Alan W. Aldrich for "Family Feuds: A Case for a Functional Typology of Communication Behaviors in Marital Conflict"; Kimberly A. Kennedy for "Family Communication of Social Support During Health-Related Crisis: A Comparative Analysis of Hispanic and Anglo Populations"; Amy S. Ebesu and Cindy B. White for "It's Hard to Send People Away: Understanding How Adults and Children Interpret Divorce"; and Paul Yelsma for "Affective Orientation of Perpetrators, Victims and Functional Spouses."

Our executive committee would like to thank our outgoing officers, Secretary Anita Vangelisti, who received an award for her outstanding service, and also student representative Kathryn Greene. We welcome our new officers, Vice-President elect Doug Kelley, Secretary April Chatham-Carpenter, and student representative Chuck Grant.

We discussed several projects at our executive and business meetings, including a pedagogical handbook to be distributed by SCA. This handbook will include approaches to teaching family communication; anyone who has taught family communication from a specific approach and who is interested in writing a description should contact me at 513-556-4440, Department of Communication, M.L. 184, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH 45221. We also discussed plans for recruiting new members this year. Spread the word about your involvement with the CFC to others! An ad hoc committee will be working on plans for a pre-convention conference for 1995's convention. Thanks for a great year!

Teresa Sabourin
