the "dailies"
The daily assignments serve a couple of functions in the class. First of all, they give you a chance to consider some of the issues and practice some of the skills that we'll be going over in class. Second, they allow me to give you credit for your attendance.
process
Each day you'll turn in the daily assignment that's due on that day, as well as pick up a daily assignment for the next class period. At the beginning of the period, we'll discuss the daily you turned in. Keep a copy for yourself to refer to in class. Since I keep the dailies to check attendance, I won't return them to you. On days when we work with HTML, the daily will be a workshop assignment that you'll pick up and complete in class.
All the dailies are scored credit/no credit. To get credit, turn the daily in. At the end of the semester, I'll count up the number of daily assignments each person has turned in. The scoring works like this:
- No more than three assignment missed: 150 points
- No more than four assignments missed: 100 points
- No more than five assignments missed:75 points
- No more than six assignments missed:50 points
- More than six assignments missed:0 points
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I can't be in class for a good reason?
Under this system, an absence is an absence, i.e., I don't try to differentiate between "good" and "bad" reasons for absences. If you're in class and turn in a daily, you get credit for it. If you're not, you don't. That means you don't need to worry about doctor's excuses, coach's excuses, etc. If you know you're going to miss class for something like a track meet, you can save your "allowed" absences for that date.
Can I have a friend turn my assignment in?
No. You must be in class to get credit for an assignment.
Can I make up assignments I missed?
No. You must be in class to get credit for an assignment and you must turn it in on the day it's due.
How can I pick up the assignment to be handed in next time so that I don't end up missing two assignments for one absence?
I will leave extra copies of the dailies (not the workshop assignments) in the lab so that you can pick one up and fill it out before it's due. Note: sometimes other class members pick up extra copies of the assignment, so it pays to pick up your copy as early as you can before they run out!
If I have something else I have to do, can I drop off my daily and leave?
No. You must be in class for the entire period to get credit for an assignment; if you have to leave a bit early in an emergency situation, tell me before class begins. You can leave after you complete your workshop assignment, but you'd be better off spending the time creating the pages for your Web site assignments.
